PILGRIMAGE OF STORIES AND STONES

Selkie Reliquary

Selkie Reliquary
2023
Brass, paint, seal skull fragment, glass, silkscreened fabric, foam, thread

When I went to Dunnottar Castle, it was in the morning and there was a haze over everything. This castle is unlike any other that I saw. It sits atop a rocky outcropping with a winding path and star that takes you down from the cliff and back up to the plateau. The seabirds were soaring and calling all around and and sea was crashing against the rocks. After I saw the castle, I went down to the beach and found this seal skull fragment. To honor that day, I made this reliquary to house the bone fragment, much like how the bones of the saints were kept sacred for pilgrims to visit and worship at.

The selkie myth has a very interesting push and pull between desire for love at the expense of freedom, and the transformation that comes when living between two states, or two worlds.
